HOW TO MEASURE FOR A
HALTER, BLANKET OR HARNESS
To ensure a good fit, you will need to measure your horse's head. Using a dressmaker's tape is best...

It bends better than a ruler and is far more accurate than a string!
"Average" Sizes

Weanling:   5" nose,  18" crown

Yearling:
6" nose,  20" crown

Two Yr. Old-Small Adult A:
7"nose,  22" crown
A.     Measure across the nose from outer edge of the
cheekbone to the same place on the other side. A to B

B.     Then measure from just below the cheekbone up over the                          poll to the same place on the other side. C = A over poll to B
Pull it snug because the bridle path will be freshly
        shaved before a show.
Write it down!
MEASURING  FOR A HARNESS

These measurements do not need to be exact, but close enough to get a good picture of your horse's structure to ensure a good fit.
This isn't the best illustration of a horse since it is somewhat stretched, but it gives you an idea of where these measurements should be taken.

a.   From one corner of the mouth, over the poll, to the other corner of the mouth.

b.   Length around nose, taken about a two-finger width below the prominent cheekbone.

c.   Measure circumference of girth.

d.   Length of back from position of harness saddle to the base of the tail.

e.   Length of horse---from point of shoulder to buttock.

f.   Height--from ground to top of withers.

g.   Breeching---from just above the stifle, around buttock, to same point on the other side.

h.   Overcheck---from poll to saddle (girth).

i.   Throatlatch

j.   Hipstrap---over the hip to (approx.) the breeching.

Average Adult A:
8" nose,  24" crown

Average Adult B:
9" nose,  26" crown

Average Adult Shetland:

If you get a number with a fraction,
such as 41 1/4", please round up to the next whole size:
41 1/4" = order a 42" blanket or sheet.
These measurements will also help to ensure that your new blanket or sheet will fit well.
